Chapter Four

Ciel watched Sean walking away for a moment before pivoting to continue down the hallway. Ash turned the corner then, and Ciel smiled at his friend, who had been checking on him twice a day for the past three days. Dax had been even worse, practically stalking Ciel. He knew it was done out of love, but he was tempted to run into Jensen’s arms and scream to the entire castle that his mate was forgiven just to get a break from the smothering attention.

Lord Klaus had been stoic while also assuring Ciel that his wishes were what mattered, but Lady Sienna’s distress worried Ciel. He had no idea what to do or say to her. As much as he believed Jensen deserved censure for his actions, he hated seeing the rift between mother and son. He’d said, for everyone to hear, that he’d forgiven Jensen, but it seemed the shock of the revelation had kept that from sinking in with most of them.

“Sean leaving?” Ash said.

“Yes. I don’t blame him, given the awkward atmosphere.”

Ash nodded. “I’ve been thinking about that. You could come stay with us for a while, if you wanted to. Give everyone time. Give yourself room to breathe.”

Ciel chewed his lower lip and then laughed nervously. “I believe Jensen’s dramatic reveal has everyone far more on edge than they need to be. I just found out Sean had been avoiding me because he thought I was angry with him. He reassured me nothing happened between him and Jensen. I’ve had a year to deal with this, and I don’t think you all see that. I didn’t want Jensen to announce it the way he did, but I’m not as traumatized as everyone seems to think.” He’d been trying so hard to convince Dax that he was all right, and it made his head ache to think about it. “I never intended to call Jensen out in front of others. In a way, I was touched by what he did.”

“Can I do anything? Talk to any of them? I’m sure Dax is hovering.”

Ciel groaned. “Yes. Gods, I love him, but he’s mingling his own pain with this.” Ciel moved to the window and looked down into the courtyard. “I love Jensen. I really do. He wronged me, and I will never justify it or make excuses for him. But … I’ve already forgiven him. And I have my own plans for our reconciliation. I know what I want from him, and I think he’s finally emotionally ready to give it to me.”

“I see. I’m happy to hear it, even if I’m still angry with him myself. I’ve just come of age, but I can’t wait to meet my mate.”

Ash was only two years older than Ciel, and they’d never stopped writing to each other over the years, though they’d rarely seen each other after Ciel went to live with Erik. “Has there still been no one?”

Most vampires became sexually active at a young age, but Ash had never been interested in dalliances.
